Research | Student Projects

The following initiatives, among others, are currently being implemented in the school with a specific focus on innovations and entrepreneurship laying emphasis on agriculture, natural resources and environmental management.

  1. Kitui County SEKU Livestock Improvement Project (KCSLIP): A five - year rural development and agribusiness project for scaling up livestock innovations established with a funding support from the County Government of Kitui.
  2. A Sustainable Livelihood Approach in drylands project (ASALI): A research funded project with a funding support from VU-Amsterdam, Netherlands focusing on food and nutrition security and natural resource management in the aid and semi-arid drylands
  3. RUFORUM Research Grant Title: Establishment of Youth ICT Linked Business Incubation Hub for Agribusiness Innovations and Increased Employment Opportunities Project at South Eastern Kenya University
  4. Experimental Learning/Demonstrations: SAVS is closely working with ICRISAT (Sorghum and Chicken pea project) and
    KALRO (Green gram, pigeon pea, beans, etc) with whom we have set up on-going field trials at the University land to provide a field laboratory for experimental land to continuously conduct farmer field days to demonstrate climate smart agriculture technologies and innovations, strengthening of model farms and farmers’. These include experiments in drought tolerant crop varieties and livestock breeds for ease of access and affordability to farmers, aquaculture, pasture restoration and establishments, plastics / polythene culture etc.
  5. Other Research and Collaborations: Internationally, we have funded research projects - China (Lanzhou Ridge- furrow
    Technology) and Germany (DAAD - Biodiversity and Conservation) project among others. The school has also several funding on national priority research funding through the National Research Fund (NRF). These projects are in line with the national Vision 2030 strategy, Agricultural Sector Development Strategy (ASDS), Agricultural Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS) and the current big 4 agenda, which includes food security and health.
